🎭 Audition Role Limit – Please Read

To ensure we have enough time to see everyone fairly, this year the production team is setting a limit of two roles per person for audition pieces. Don’t worry—this doesn’t mean you won’t be considered for other roles. It simply helps us manage time effectively during the audition process.

There’s a section on the audition form where you can indicate any additional characters you’d like to be considered for. The creative team will take all preferences into account when casting.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation—we want to give everyone the best possible chance to shine!

If any role does not get filled on audition day, another date has been put in place for recalls which will take place on the 15th April.

The audition panel reserve the right to offer parts to those who they feel suit a role, even if it is not a role that person has auditioned for.

If you are unable to attend the audition date due to personal reasons but would like to audition for a part, please inform the Production Manager as soon as reasonably possible so that we can facilitate you.

You may be asked to read in for parts on the day of auditions, please do not worry this just gives the panel an overall view of the roles.

We hope to release the cast list by email by Wednesday 15th April but no earlier than Tuesday 14th April as the cast list will need to be finalised and recalls may be needed.

Tips for Auditioning

Character Understanding:

The show is full of characters of all sizes, so everyone will have a chance to shine. Treat these characters as fully real people – not just a live action adaptation of an animated film. Every character has hopes and dreams and doubts and fears, so embrace that. You don’t need to come to the audition with every single detail worked out, but find the truth of the character inside you, and let that breathe life into your performance.

Stage Presence:

This show is high-energy, with everyone in the ensemble playing about a dozen parts! Bring your enthusiasm and dynamism to your workshops and audition, and show off what you can do. The single most important thing is the ability to sell and tell the story. Whether that’s as a principal character or as an ensemble member, every single person on stage will be acting the entire time and selling this story. The cast will often interact with one another on stage and talk directly to the audience, so a commanding stage presence will help your audition stand out.

Notes about Auditions

Everyone is expected to attend one vocal workshop and one dance workshop

Dialogue Auditions

  • We have provided the page numbers and the characters that are to audition on those pages. This will let the production team see a scene with numerous characters working together. This will also help you see what kind of audition you need to do for that scene depending which character you are interested in.
  • If you are looking at more than one character in a scene, we will run it again with different people taking on different roles. However, you may not read in for all the scenes.
  • We may also ask people to read in for other characters throughout auditions.
  • Please make sure you read the scenes before auditioning to give yourself a good idea of how to play the character. You are able to use your lib for auditions, but do not let it get in the way of your performance.

Vocal Auditions

  • Please think about where the song comes into the story to give you an idea how the song needs to be performed.
  • If you make a mistake during your audition, please don’t hesitate to stop and restart – The panel wants to see the best version of you!
  • There will be an audition pianist present – When they play, they will be asked to follow your lead
  • During the audition the panel may ask you to stop before the end of the song you are performing. This does not reflect the quality of your performance.

Dance Auditions

  • Emma will be teaching 2 short dances for the auditions. One will be a simple movement section, and one a little more advanced.
  • The first is for all to learn, the second is for anyone auditioning for Esmerelda or wanting to be considered for more featured dance sections in the show.
  • If anyone wants to perform the more advanced routine then they don’t need to do the movement section for the audition, but EVERYONE is welcome to learn both.
  • Emma will teach both pieces at the workshop on Thursday 26th March. They will be videoed for anyone who can’t attend or needs to practise, and Emma will also aim to go over them once in the workshops of Wednesday 8th & Thursday 9th April.
  • The audition will take place in small groups, depending on numbers.
  • We are not expecting perfection, we are looking for potential. Be confident, do your best and have fun with it!
